How Much Time Off Do You Need After a Tooth Extraction?
After a simple extraction most people are back to normal the next day; wisdom teeth take a few more days. What to expect day by day and how to plan your trip.

After a simple tooth extraction, most people are back to their normal routine the next day, eating carefully and skipping hard workouts. If you’re having a wisdom tooth removed or the extraction is surgical, plan for a few quiet days: swelling keeps building for the first two days and peaks around day 3 or 4. The exact number of days depends on your case, and the surgeon will tell you at your exam. Here’s how to plan around it — including the drive back across the border.
Not every extraction is the same
How long recovery takes depends mostly on how straightforward the extraction is:
- Simple extraction. The tooth is fully visible and comes out in one piece. It’s usually a short procedure under local anesthesia with a lighter recovery.
- Wisdom tooth or surgical extraction. The tooth may be partly covered by gum or bone, come in at an angle, or have tricky roots. More work is done in the area, so there’s more swelling and a few more days of soreness.
If you’re not sure which one you need, the exam answers that before the extraction is scheduled. We go into more detail in simple vs. surgical extraction.
What to expect, day by day
Everyone heals at their own pace, but this is the typical course:
| Day | What’s normal | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Light bleeding, numb for a few hours, soreness as it wears off | Rest, cold pack on the cheek, soft cold food |
| Day 2 | Swelling keeps increasing | Light activity only; no strenuous exercise |
| Days 3–4 | Swelling peaks and starts going down | Many people are back at work; after wisdom teeth you may prefer to stay home |
| Days 5–7 | Minimal discomfort | Back to most of your activities |
| Days 7–10 | Gum keeps healing | Stitches, if any, fall out on their own or are removed |
The best sign you’re on track isn’t the number of days but the trend: after day 3 or 4, you should feel a little better every morning.
How many days to take off
As a general guide for planning:
- Desk job or school, simple extraction. Many people take only the day of the appointment and go back the next day.
- Wisdom tooth or surgical extraction. Block out the days when swelling is highest. Booking late in the week puts those days on your weekend.
- Physically demanding job. No heavy lifting or strenuous effort for at least 48 hours; ask the doctor whether your case calls for longer.
- If you talk a lot for work (customer service, teaching, sales), your jaw may tire easily for the first few days.
Having several teeth removed in one visit usually means a more noticeable recovery than a single tooth. The surgeon will tell you what to expect.
Planning your trip from the Imperial Valley
Extractions are the treatment most often chosen by patients who cross from the U.S.: in 2026, 37 % of our extraction appointments were for patients with a U.S. phone number. A few tips:
- Most extractions take a single visit. In 2026 our patients needed 1.2 appointments on average. The appointment itself is booked for 60 minutes.
- Driving back. With simple local anesthesia you can come alone and drive yourself home. If your case calls for something different, the doctor will tell you at the appointment.
- The wait at the crossing. Bring extra gauze, a cold pack in a small cooler, water and your pain medication, so you can keep pressure on the area and take your dose on time while you wait.
- Time zone. We’re on Pacific Time, the same as Calexico and El Centro.
- Book late in the week so the swollen days fall on your weekend.
Driving, exercise and food
Exercise. Nothing strenuous for the first 48 hours: running, weights or contact sports raise blood pressure and can restart the bleeding. Walking is fine.
Food. For the first few days, soft, cold or lukewarm food: yogurt, mashed potatoes, lukewarm soup, smoothies (no straw), scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, hard, crunchy or spicy food, small seeds and fizzy drinks. Ease back into your normal diet as the soreness fades, chewing on the other side.
What protects your recovery most is the blood clot that forms in the socket: don’t spit, don’t use a straw, don’t rinse hard, and don’t smoke for at least 5 days. If that clot is lost, you can get a dry socket, the most common reason recovery drags on.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go back to work the same day?
After a simple extraction with a desk job, many people do. Keep in mind the area stays numb for a few hours, you should bite on the gauze for the first 30 to 45 minutes, and you shouldn't do anything strenuous for 48 hours.
Should I book on a Friday or Saturday?
If you have a physical job or talk a lot at work, it helps: the days with the most swelling fall on your weekend. We're open Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, so you can pick what fits.
Can I cross back into the U.S. the same day?
Yes. With simple local anesthesia you can drive yourself; your mouth will stay numb for a few hours, and if your case needs something different, the doctor will tell you. Bring gauze and something cold for the wait in line, and plan to eat once the numbness wears off.
I lift heavy things at work. When can I go back?
Avoid heavy effort for at least the first 48 hours, because it raises blood pressure and can restart the bleeding. Tell the doctor about your job at the exam so they can tell you how many days make sense in your case.
