Illustration of the parts that are priced when saving a tooth: root canal–treated root, resin core and crown, next to a price tag

Saving a tooth with a root canal has three parts that are priced separately: the root canal itself, which cleans and seals the canals; a composite core or a post, which rebuilds the tooth from the inside; and the crown, which protects it from the outside. The list price of each part and the approximate total are in “Quick facts” above and on our price list. Your exact cost comes in writing after your exam, before any work begins.

What you pay for in a root canal treatment

1. The root canal

The damaged or infected nerve is removed, and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed. At our office it is done by Dr. Gabriel Jiménez, the endodontist on our team, in a 90-minute appointment. Our price list has one root canal price per tooth.

2. A composite core or a post

After a root canal the tooth is hollow inside and more brittle. To give the crown something solid to hold on to:

  • Composite core: rebuilds the missing part when there’s enough tooth left.
  • Post: placed inside the root when little tooth remains and more support is needed.

The doctor decides which one you need based on how much healthy tooth is left.

3. The crown

The cap that covers the tooth so it doesn’t crack when you chew. There are two options:

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: strong and the more affordable of the two.
  • Metal-free: more natural-looking, without the dark line that can show at the gum; often preferred for front teeth.

In some cases an inlay or onlay can be used instead of a full crown. The doctor tells you after seeing the tooth.

Why the crown is a separate step

The crown isn’t an optional extra: a tooth with a root canal needs its final restoration, usually a crown, so it doesn’t fracture. It’s a different job, done by Dr. Jesara López, and it happens at another appointment, because first we confirm the tooth responded well to the root canal and then the crown is made to fit.

That’s why we price it in parts: you know what you’re paying at each visit and can plan for it. If you need time between the root canal and the permanent crown, a long-term temporary crown (PMMA) protects the tooth in the meantime. What we don’t recommend is going months with only the temporary filling.

What changes the total

  • Core or post. Depends on how much tooth is left.
  • Crown material. Porcelain-fused-to-metal or metal-free.
  • A repeat root canal. If the tooth already had a root canal that failed, it’s a retreatment, priced differently, and a post may have to come out first. See failed root canal and retreatment.
  • Catching it early. When decay is close to the nerve but hasn’t damaged it yet, a pulp cap can sometimes avoid the root canal altogether. Read signs you need a root canal.

What if I just pull it?

Pulling the tooth is the cheapest option that day, but the gap has a cost: over time the neighboring teeth drift and your bite changes. If you later replace it with an implant, the total is usually higher than saving your own tooth (compare both totals in “Quick facts” and the FAQ). Sometimes extraction really is the right call, for example with a cracked root. We compare both in root canal or extraction? and what a dental implant costs in Mexicali.

Coming from the U.S.: how the visits work

About one in four of our root canal appointments in 2026 (24 %) were for patients with a U.S. phone number, mostly from the Imperial Valley. Here’s what to expect:

  • Visits. Most root canals were finished in 1 or 2 appointments (1.6 on average), and the crown is a separate visit after that. Plan for at least two crossings; we don’t promise root canal and permanent crown on the same day.
  • Same clock as California. Mexicali runs on Pacific Time. We’re open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Close to the border. We’re at Calz. Cuauhtémoc 317, Local 1, about 3 miles from the Calexico West (downtown) crossing, with parking nearby. Leave room for the line back.
  • What to bring. A photo ID and your border-crossing document, a list of your medications, and any X-rays or treatment plan your U.S. dentist gave you. You can send X-rays ahead by WhatsApp.
  • Booking. WhatsApp or call +52 686 203 1211, the same number from the U.S.; our front desk answers in English. When we confirm, you get a link to fill out your medical history on your phone.

If you have questions about paperwork for your U.S. insurance, ask us by WhatsApp before your visit.

Comparing quotes

If you have another quote, in Mexico or at home, compare it part by part:

  • Does it include the core or post, or only the canals?
  • Does it include the crown, and what material?
  • Is the root canal done by an endodontist?
  • How many visits, and when does the crown go on?

A root canal that looks cheap sometimes leaves out the rebuild, and that’s the part that keeps the tooth from breaking.

How to pay

We accept U.S. dollars in cash or by card, Mexican pesos, debit and credit cards, and bank transfers. You get an itemized receipt by WhatsApp, and we can issue a Mexican tax invoice (CFDI) if you need one. After your exam you receive a written treatment plan as a PDF by WhatsApp, with the cost of each step; nothing is done until you approve it.

At our office in Mexicali

The endodontist treats the canals and Dr. Jesara does the rebuild and the crown, all in the same office. After each step you get the matching guide in English by WhatsApp: root canal aftercare, composite core or dental post, and dental crown care. See the full treatment on root canals in Mexicali.

Frequently asked questions

Does the root canal price include the crown?

No. The root canal ($3,500 MXN (≈ USD 212)) treats the canals; the crown ($5,000–$7,500 MXN (≈ USD 303–455)) is the restoration that protects the tooth afterward. Your written plan lists them separately.

Can I get the root canal on one trip and the crown on the next?

Yes, that's how it usually works: the crown is a separate appointment. Don't wait months, though. A root canal tooth without its restoration can crack; a long-term temporary crown ($2,800 MXN (≈ USD 170)) can protect it in between.

Is it cheaper to just pull the tooth?

On the day, yes: an extraction starts from $1,500 MXN (≈ USD 91). But if you later replace it with an implant, implant and crown come to from USD 1,300 per tooth, plus the extraction, which is more than saving it.

Can I pay in U.S. dollars?

Yes, in cash or by card. Our list prices are in Mexican pesos, and you can also pay in pesos, by debit or credit card, or by bank transfer.

Can you tell me the cost before I cross?

Send us a photo or your X-rays by WhatsApp and we can tell you what's likely. The exact plan and cost are set at your in-person exam, in writing, before anything is done.
